Atra Vetosus

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι τρέφω μία ιδιαίτερη αγάπη για το Black Metal, έτσι μία μέρα καθώς έψαχνα στο internet για να ανακαλύψω κάτι φρέσκo, η αναζήτηση με οδήγησε σε ένα εκπληκτικό κομμάτι. Στην αρχή άκουσα μία μελαγχολική μελωδία να βγαίνει από ένα πιάνο (μπορεί να ήταν και synth, αλλά δεν μας νοιάζει αυτό αυτήν την στιγμή) και τότε άκουσα... μία κραυγή, άγρια αλλά άκρως ταιριαστή στην ατμόσφαιρα του κομματιού, κάπως έτσι λοιπόν αναγκάστκα να ξανακούσω αυτήν την εισαγωγή, αυτή την φορά με περισσότερη προσοχή. Δυνατά και μελωδικά riffs, που θυμίζουν λίγο old school Σουηδικό black metal, τύμπανα που θυμίζουν Faust (το λες και κοπλιμέντο), σκοτεινές και μελωδικές συνθέσεις είναι μερικά από τα υλικά που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για αυτό το κομμάτι. Δεν θα το αναλύσω περαιτέρω, καθώς νομίζω ότ όλοι καταλάβατε πως περιγράφω ένα απίστευτο κομμάτι. Το όνομα του κομματιού λοιπόν είναι Tortured By The Light Of A Thousand Stars από το album Voices from the Eternal Night των Atra Vetosus. Κάπου εδώ ήρθε η ώρα να «ακούσουμε» τι έχουν να μας πουν και οι ίδιοι.

Διορθώστε με αν λάθος, οι Atra Vetosus φτιάχτηκαν από τον Josh Slikver Young, ποια ήταν η μουσική ανάγκη που σε οδήγησε στην δημιουργία τους;

Ξεκίνησα τους Atra Vetosus το 2011 μαζί με τον τραγουδιστή Josh Gee, την οποία πρόσφτα μάλιστα συνάντησα πρόσφατα σε άλλα μουσικά projects. Είχα πάντα την επιθυμία να γράψω μουσική σε κοντινό ύφος με τις μπάντες που άκουγα τότε (Dissection, Sacramentum, Vinterland, Dawn, κλπ). Πήρα λοιπόν τις επιρροές που είχα από αυτές τις μπάντες, χωρίς όμως να τις αντιγράφω. Οι Atra Vetosus είναι «μέσον» με το οποίο θα εξερευνώ αυτό το είδος (Μελωδικό Black Metal) πιο ενδελεχώς.

Πως θα περιέγραφες το μουσικό ταξίδι με την μπάντα μέχρι τώρα;

 Αρχίσαμε σαν ένα black metal project δύο ανθρώπων. Γρήγορα ηχογραφήσαμε 3 demo τραγούδια, τα οποία κυκλοφόρησαν τον πρώτο χρόνο κιόλας από την Immortal Frost Productions, εξασφαλίζοντας μας μία σταθερή πορεία. Εκείνη την περίοδο προσπαθούσαμε από project να γίνουμε full band ώστε να καταφέρουμε να βγούμε στην σκηνή. Αυτή η προσπάθεια πήγα αργά στην αρχή, αλλά εν τέλει καταφέραμε να δημιουργήσουμε την τωρινή μας σύνθεση.

Λίγο αργότερα λοιπόν, αρχίσαμε να δουλέυουμε πάνω στο πρώτο full length album μας, το οποίο ηχογραφήσαμε, μιξάραμε και ετοιμάσαμε εντελώς μόνοι μας, το ποίο κυκλοφόρησε επίσης από την εταιρία μας. Έχοντας λοιπόν ένα album και μία σταθερή σύνθεση, θεωρήσαμε ότι βρισκόμασταν σε ένα καλό επίπεδο. Στην συνέχεια επικεντρωθήκαμε σε διάφορες εμφανίσεις στην Αυστραλία και στην σύνθεση του ν’έου μας album “Apricity”. Με το νέο μας υλικό, φάνηκε ότι η μουσική μας εξελίσσεται και περιλαμβάνει πλέον περισσότερα στοιχεία από διάφορα είδη της Black Metal σκηνή, περισσότερα ατμοσφαιρικά μέρη και με επιρροές από την Depressive αλλά Post Black σκηνή.  Αργότερα συνθέσαμε ένα EP με ένα τραγούδι, το 'Ius Vitae Necisque' το οποίο απότελεί ένα είδος φόρου τιμής στον τωρινό μας ήχο πριν συνέχισουμε την πορεία μας με το νέο album. Όσον αφορά το παρόν, έχουμε τελειώσει με τον καινούργιο μας δίσκο, ο οποίος θα κυκλοφορήσει κι αυτός από την Immortal Frost Productions και θα συνδιαστεί με μία Ευρωπαϊκή περιοδεία.

Αν και τα Λατινικά μου είναι κάπως σκουριασμένα, το όνομα σας νομίζω σημαίνει Αρχαίοι Σκοτεινοί Άνεμοι. Ποια είναι η ιστορία πίσω από την επιλογή του συγκεκριμένου ονόματος;

Μεταφράζοντας το όνομα μας, θέλαμε να βγαίνει το Αρχαίοι Σκοτεινοί Άνεμοι. Το όνομα λοιπόν, έγκειται περισσότερο στο στιχουργικό μέρος της μπάντας, που έχει να κάνει με θέματα όπως η φύση, αρχαία πνεύματα και πολιτισμούς, το αίσθημα της απώλειας, την απομόνωση και την κενότητα.

Η μπάντα φτιάχτηκε το 2011, από το 2012 και μετά δεν έχετε ούτε μία αλλαγή στην σύνθεση σας, ήσασταν φίλοι και πριν την μπάντα ή ήταν κάτι που έγινε στην πορεία;

Ο Josh Gee και εγώ ξεκινήσαμε την μπάντα στις αρχές του 2011, λίγο αργότερα γίναμε και φίλοι. Ο Damon ήταν ο πρώτος που μπήκε στην μπάντα, καθώς ήμασταν φίλοι αρκετά χρόνια και γνώριζα και πόσο ικανός κιθαρίστας είναι. Ο Josef και ο Lopez μπήκαν στην μπάντα ύστερα από προτάσεις κοινών μας φίλων. Η πόλη από την οποία προεχρόμαστε, Launceston, είναι αρκετά μικρή και έτσι μπορεί να γίνει πραγματικά δύσκολο το να βρεις μουσικούς ικανούς που να θέλουν να παίξουν Black Metal, ευτυχώς για μας βρεθήκαμε όλοι στο ίδιο μέρος την σωστή στιγμή, οπότε ταιριάξαμε έυκολα.

Αυτήν την περίοδο βρίσκεστε σε φάση σύνθεσης του νέου σας album, το οποίο θα κυκλοφορήσει το 2018, μπορείτε να μας πεις τι πρόκειται να ακούσουμε;

Το Apricity θα είναι πιο ώριμο, πιο ολοκληρωμένο και με γενικά πιο βελτιωμένο ήχο από οι προηγούμενες μας κυκλοφορίες. Αν και ακόμα διατηρούμε το ύφος του μελωδικού black metal, το χρησιμοποιούμε ως πυρήνα ώστε να εξερευνήσουμε και άλλα πράγματα. Το album θα είναι πιο ατμοσφαιρικό, σκοτεινότερο, πιο υποβλητικό και θα διαθέτει μία μεγαλύτερη ποικιλία για τον ακροατή.

Ποιες μπάντες σας έχουν εμπνεύσει;

 Όπως προείπα, η αρχίκη σπίθα για την δημιουργία των Atra Vetosus ήρθε κυρίως από την Σουδική μελωδική black metal σκηνή. Με τις καινούργιες μας δουλειές όμως όπου περιλανβάνουν περίσσοτερα μουσικά ιδιώματα, φαίνονται και οι διαφορετικές επιρροές των μελών της μπάντας. Είναι δύσκολο να ονομάσω μπάντες, καθώς είναι τόσες πολλές, αλλά μπορώ να πω είδη όπως το 

post black/blackgaze, doom, dsbm, atmospheric και το avant garde.

Ποιοι είναι οι στόχοι σου για την μπάντα;

Γενικότερα αφήνουμε το πράγμα να πηγαίνει μόνο του χωρίς να πιέζουμε τις καταστάσεις. Πιστεύω πως ήδη έχουμε καταφέρει περισσότερα πράγματα απ’ότι φανταζόμασταν στην αρχή. Βασικός μας στόχος για αυτήν την χρονιά, είναι να ξαναρχίσουμε τις live εμφανίσεις κάτι το ποίο είχαμε αφήσει λίγο πίσω τον προηγούμενο χρόνο και να ολοκληρώσουμε το νέο μας album. Ο μεγαλύτερος μας στόχος είναι κάνουμε όλα αυτά τα βήματα που απαιτούνται, ώστε να κάνουμε την Ευρωπαϊκή μας περιοδεία, κάτι που είναι πολύ κοντά. Μετά από αυτό, δεν είμαστε βέβαιοι για το τι θα ακολουθήσει, αλλά είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι να δούμε σε πόσα μέρη του κόσμου μπορεί να μας πάει η  μπάντα.

Ποια διαδικασία ακολουθείτε κατά την σύνθεση ενός τραγουδιού; Είναι πρώτα η μουσική ή οι στίχοι και από που εμπνέεσται τόσο μουσικά όσο και στιχουργικά;

Πρώτα γράφουμε την μουσική και μετά ο Josh Gee γράφει τους στίχους βασιζόμενος σε θέματα που θεωρεί ότι ταιριάζουν με την μουσική. Οι περισσότερες συνθέσεις είναι έργο του Josh Young, κάτι που όμως πρόκειται να αλλάξει καθώς θέλουμε η διαδικασία της σύνθεσης να περνάει απ’όλα μας τα μέλη.

Θα επισκεφθείτε την Ευρώπη λοιπόν με το Apricity Tour, πείτε μου λίγα πράγματα για αυτό.

Είμαστε πάρα πολύ ενθουσιαμσένοι για αυτό το επικείμενο tour (φαντάζομαι το έχετε καταλάβει ήδη). Αυτήν την στιγμή έχουμε κλέισει 14εις εμφανίσεις από τις 16 προβλεπόμενες, θα επισκεφθούμε 9 διαφορετικές χώρες, συμπεριλαμβανομένων της Ολλανδίας, Βέλγιο, Γερμανιά, Τσεχία, Πολωνία, Σλοβακία, Αυστρία, Ιταλία και Γαλλία (από κάτω υπάρχει το πλήρρες πρόγραμμα).

Βρίσκομαστε σε συζητήσεις για αυτό το tour καιρό τώρα. Σκεφτήκαμε ότι το καλύτερο θα ήταν να το συνδιάζαμε και με το νέο μας album. Σε αυτό το ταξίδι μαζί μας θα είναι σαν co-headliners οι Ισπανοί Perennial Isolation καθώς και οι Βέλγοι Drawn Into Decent σαν support, με τους οποίους είμαστ και στην ίδια εταιρία. Σας συνηστώ να ακούσετε και τις δύο μπάντες.

Ο label manager, ο Surtur είναι αυτός που έχει αναλάβει το όλο εγχείρημα, καθώς αυτός έκλεισε τόσο τις εμφανίσεις όσο και κάθε τι άλλο διαδικαστικό. Μέχρι τώρα έχουμε κανονίσει τις 14 από τις 16 εμφανίσεις μας.

Είστε εξοικιωμένοι με την Ελληνική Metal σκηνή; Υπάρχουν κάποιες μπάντες που να σας αρέσουν; Θα θέλατε να επισκεφθείτε την χώρα μας;

Δεν θα το έλεγα ότι έχουμε κάποια ιδιαίτερη επαφή με την ελληνική σκήνη, εκτός βέβαια από τους SepticFlesh και τους Rotting Christ, και σίγουρα θα θέλαμε να έρθουμε να παίξουμε κάποια στιγμή, καθώς έχουμε ακούσει ότι η ελληνική σκηνή είναι πολύ δυνατή και η Ελλάδα πανέμορφη. Αξίζει να σημειώσω ότι έχουμε μερικές μέρες κενές μετά το tour, χαχα.

Yeah it’s true I have a love for black metal, so one day while I was searching the web to “discover” something new, something I haven’t heard before, τηε search led me to an amazing song; in the beginning I heard a melancholic melody coming out from a piano (or a synth, but that’s not the point) and then… and then a powerful scream was heard, harsh but at the same time it was fitting so smoothly with the atmosphere of the song, that made me to hear again this intro with more attention. Powerful, melodic and a little bit old-school Swedish style, guitar riffs, the drumming reminded me Faust’s drumming (I guess that’s a compliment), dark and melodic compositions were the “ingredients” used for that song. I won’t analyze it more; I think it’s obvious by now that I am describing an amazing song. The song’s name was TorturedByTheLightOfA Thousand Stars from the album Voices from the Eternal Nightof Atra Vetosus. But now it’s the time to hear what they have to say.

Greetings guys, first of all I want to thank you for your time and for this interview. Correct me if I am wrong, but Atra Vetosus, were formed from Josh Slikver Young, which was the musical need(s) that led you to form Atra Vetosus?

I started AtraVetosus in 2011 along with vocalist JoshGee who I'd recently met through other musical projects. I had the desire to write music in the vein of the bands I was then listening to on heavy rotation (Dissection, Sacramentum, Vinterland, Dawn, etc).  I'd taken influences from these bands in other projects, but only in a limited capacity. Atra Vetosus was a way to explore this genre more fully.

How would you describe your musical journey with the band up to now?

To begin we were just a basic 2 man bedroom black metal project. We hastily recorded a 3 song demo, which was picked up and released by Immortal Frost Productions the same year, gaining us a steady following. Around the release we were attempting to establish the project as a full live band to take to the stage. This was slow in the beginning but using local contacts we managed to establish our current solid lineup.

Shortly after we begun on our full length album, which we recorded, mixed and mastered ourselves and also released through Immortal Frost Productions. With the album release and a steady stream of live shows we were establishing ourselves quiet well.

We continued mainly focusing on live shows in Australia here after and composing material for forthcoming release 'Apricity'.

With the recent material it was becoming evident our music was evolving, encompassing a wider variety of genres within the black metal spectrum, such as atmospheric, depressive and post black metal.

We put together a single song EP 'Ius Vitae Necisque' serving as a sort of homage to our current sound before proceeding with our upcoming album.At present we've just finished the album, again to be released through Immortal Frost Productions, accompanied with a European Tour to coincide with the release.

Though my Latin is a little bit rusty, I think your name means AncientDarkWinds. What’s the story behind the name of the band?

Ancient Dark Winds is what we aimed for in the translation. The name at the time embodied the lyrical themes within the music (nature, ancient spirits and civilizations, feelings of loss, isolation and emptiness).

The band was formed at 2011, and since from 2012 you have not a single line up change, you were friends before the band, you become during your work in the band?
Josh Gee and I started the band in early 2011, soon after becoming friends. Damon was quickly recruited as we'd been friends for several years and I knew he was a competent guitarist. Josef and Lopez were recruited through recommendations from friends we knew. Being that our hometown is a small place it seemed like quiet the challenge to find the right musicians, both competent and interesting in the genre, so we're thankful all fell into place with relative ease.

This time you are composing your new album, which will be released in the 2018, can give a taste of what we are going to listen?

'Apricity' conveys a more mature, expansive and overall fleshed out sound than our previous offerings. Though, still embedded in melodic black metal we've expanded upon this core. The album is more atmospheric, darker, emotive and conveys a wider array of tones to the listener.

Which are the bands that inspired you?

As stated above, the original inception and inspiration for Atra Vetosus, was primarily Swedish melodic black metal bands. With the recent material we've encompassed a lot more, with each members other musical influences taking hold. It's hard to name specific bands as we all have a variety of different bands we listen to but the but some genres include, post black/blackgaze, doom, dsbm, atmospheric and avantgarde.

What are your goals for the band?

We've always have a fairly casual attitude towards the band, letting it evolve as it will without too much force or expectation from us. I believe we've already achieved more than we set out to.

Our main goals this year has been getting back to live shows (which we'd taken a break from the previous year), recording and mixing our album and the biggest goal of all putting the steps in place for our European tour, which is taking great form at present.

After that, we're unsure, but we are excited to see how many places we can take this band across the world.

What is the procedure when you are composing a song? Are the lyrics first or the music? What’s the cradle of inspiration for Atra Vetosus, both musically and lyrically?

The music is composed first, and JoshGee writes the lyrics afterwards, constructing the lyrical themes that he feels tie in well with the songs. Up until now JoshYoung has composed most of the music, but we intend to make the process fully collaborative for material henceforth

You are going to visit Europe for the Apricity Tour, tell me more about that.

We are very excited for the European tour (if that hasn't become obvious throughout this interview, haha).

At present we have locked in 14 of the 16 proposed dates for the tour, spanning 9 countries including Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Italy and France (I'll leave a full list of the dates and cities below).

We'd been in discussion with our label manager about touring Europe for last couple years. It was decided it would be best to base the tour around our new album. Perennial Isolation from Spain will be co-headlining the tour and our label mates Drawn Into Decent from Belgium will be supporting aswell, both bands I highly recommend checking out!

Our label manager Surtur has by far done the majority of the organization in booking the shows and organizing everything in between. 14 out of the proposed 16 shows are currently booked.
