Amon Amarth @ Fuzz Club

\r\nSaturday, February 14th and there is no better way to rise above the ridiculous Valentine’s Day than to go to one of the best live shows of the year. Amon Amarth were on Greek grounds for the second time and fans were flooding FUZZ Club. Opening act was Heathendom, a Greek band which recently released their first album and has already created a buzz on their name.  \r\n

\r\nIt wasn’t the first time I watched the band, however, it was the first time I watched them in such a big venue and with a much better acoustics than any other venue I’ ve seen them before. You need a strong stomach to get on a stage before fans urging to see the headliners who almost always shout out the name of the headliners even when the support band is on stage. And this is exactly what happened. However the crowd did participate in the bands performance and followed the suggestions of the singer to join in. Generally I’d say it was a good show for the band and really helpful for an upcoming band since they played in front of a full house (almost 1200 people). Their performance was really good, as it always is and their stage performance very professional. \r\n

\r\n
\r\nDark spot of the evening was at the end of their performance, when the base player got into a dispute with the fans in the front rows. As the band informed me afterwards someone through a bottle at him and he responded to that. In any case it was rather unfortunate as an incident and the band should make sure it never happens again.  \r\n

\r\n

\r\nHeathendom are good musicians and professionals in their work, they surely deserve our attention and a better attitude towards them.

\r\n

\r\nJust after Heathendom left the stage and as the clock stroke 21:50, Amon Amarth arose. They invaded the stage in front of the passionate Athenian audience for the second time so far and in my opinion on the best possible day. Surely there is no better way to spend the vacant and silly day called Valentine’s Day… As I’ve previously mentioned in my review of the album Twilight Of The Thunder God, Amon Amarth never abandon you and they proved it once more in the best possible way.  \r\n

\r\n

\r\n
\r\n

\r\n

\r\nThe first notes of Twilight Of The Thunder God spilled from the speakers and the Viking wind breezed in Fuzz Club. At this point we must point out the fact the venue was fully ventilated which was a very pleasant surprise for a Greek venue. Fans were responding deliriously to the band and this proves how popular the new album is within the Greek metalheadz. The setlist of the show is on the bottom of the report. \r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n
\r\n
\r\nThe Norse were as always well bonded and extremely mature on stage while their ability to stir the crowd with their every note is indisputable. What disappointed me – personally- is the fact they no longer play many songs from older releases which also happened on February 14th in Athens.

\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\nOn stage they were 100% LIVE not just doing a show to get on with it and Johan Hegg was the one who stimulated the crowd with his humor. He joked about Valentines day by demonstrating some slang greek he learned but also when he guided people to sing along on The Pursuit Of Vikings saying “don’t worry if you don’t know the lyrics, it’s death metal, no one will know the difference anyway”.Sound in the venue was pretty good and the promoters’ true professionals as everything went according to the time schedule. Basically there is nothing I can think that spoiled the night we enjoyed in Fuzz. \r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\nAmon Amarth is one of the biggest bands of our time and not without a reason. They are constantly on the road, they are devoted to what they do, they are professionals but also they are passionate and love what they do. The only thing left for us to do is thank them for the unforgettable mements they offered us and hope to see them again in Greece soon … \r\n
