Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

\r\nCome on, let’s dig this from the start. The new album kicks in with a dull, "been played a zillion times" riff. The song evolves into something beautiful though, with the usual leads taking a hold of the situtation and the double bass bringing the known Amon Amarth epic feeling. So far, so good. And yes, we excuse the Maiden twin guitars, they were due to show up anyway. Moving on to the second track you realise, not the downward spiral you’ll doomed to fall into, but the mediocre level the later albums of these Swedes have been showing to the world.

\r\n I never got round to realise why this band’s name spread over the masses. Hypocrisy and Dissection never managed to get this high..Surely the, easy to follow, songs help as well as the windmill headbanging choreography of their videos but I don’t think the fuzz is worth it in the end. "Once Sent From The Golden Hall" was a kick ass album without a shadow of doubt but after so many album releases the agrression has left the building leaving the melody alone. That is not necesarily bad BUT, I am here to state my opinion!

\r\n About "Surtur Rising" now. It’s exactly what you’d expect from Amon Amarth at this point. There are a few surprises(Doom Over Dead Man) sounding strange though. The use of keyboards in the track mentioned above is indeed an alternate proposition from the melodeath outfit. But in songs like "Slaves of Fear and "Live Without Regrets" you can guess what’s coming from the very first second. I don’t know if I’m becoming an overeacting bitch right now but the "death metal" element is only there for the fuck of it. The riffing is SOOO simplified that leaves the melodic leads behind the wheel alone to handle the situation. The SOAD cover(Aerials) is given through their personal filter, and I consider it a bonus to the whole release. Quite an interesting point of view.

\r\n Whatever I may write about this matters not. "Surtrur Rising" is bound to sell its ass off, it’s all a matter of taste in the end and mine will allow only for a few more listening sessions. Still, I’d prefere younger kids getting into metal with Amon Amarth in the role of the "trendy band of these days" rather than crap like Atreyu and Bring Me The Horizon. Those inlove with AA’s later albums will dig this one too. On the other those with a more digging appetite will take their shovels to another beach. And for fuck’s sake: I got so damn BORED of titles of this type: "blah blah OF blah". Show some mercy!\r\n
