The Battalion - Head Up High

The Battalion - Head Up High

\r\nFour years ago, four bullies from Norway that already had left their previous bands(Old Funeral, Grimfist, Taake, Borknagar, etc) came up to the conclusion that the music they wanted to play should be simple yet essential. Without too much mumbling and unnecessary stuff. So, they created The Battalion and play ass kicking music. It is that simple.
\r\n
\r\n To describe this a bit better: they combine the attitude of Venom and Motorhead with Show No Mercy(yes, THAT one)’s thrash-ness adding punk elements to spice things up. "Head Up High" kicks major ass with its immediacy, these guys make sure every second counts and provide us and themselves with pure violent entertainment. Those of you who are in your thirties will surely remember the shock caused by Bewitched’s Diabolical Desecration about 14 years ago. It wasn’t just because it was something groundbreaking but because it reminded people that experimenting is good but the essense of things may dwell in simplicity and immediacy. So, straight forward metal with an attitude, sharpness and mosh party frenzy!
\r\n
\r\n The songs are memorable and catchy and push you to relentless beer consumption. Lyrically we are taken back to the ’80’s and love titles like "When Death Becomes Dangerous" and "Within the Frame of the Graveyard", both of which are amazing. Party mood, groove, headbanging but it’s not as retro as it may sound, or as bands like Toxic Holocaust may sound. They are more true to themselves, there is no "must be" in it. Black metal(not as grim) vocals are the proof.
\r\n
\r\n The sound and production is exactly where they should be, so the songs sound like they should. In my humble opinion this effort is far more effective that the one of Darkthrone in their latest albums. The Battalion’s music is more focused, more efficient. Those of you into this particular underground zone probably have already discovered these norwegian freaks, the rest of us had better have a closer look into their material, their first EP is still available in 7 inch vinyl! And since this is only their second full length I grab a shovel and a flashlight and start digging.\r\n
