Comeback Kid - Symptoms + Cures

Comeback Kid - Symptoms + Cures

\r\nI never took the time to dig the modern punk/core scene in depth, not that I was prejudiced or something but nothing had hooked me from the genre before in order to do so. But Canadians Comeback Kid gave me my shoes in hand with their new album from the very first listening! Such nice surprises are like a hot pizza when on diet: it’s a sin but you gotta have it!

\r\n The bar has been raised quite a few inches when compared to the band’s past. The vocals are a lot harsher and bring John Henry of Darkest Hour to mind, passionate singing and constant throat ripping. There are no clean vocals on "Symptoms + Cures", the guy has an amazingly intense screaming voice and he makes sure he delivers throughout the whole duration. Composition level has been upgraded too. I easily thing that "G.M. Vincent & I", "Balance" and "Get Alone"  stand out as the best songs of the album and "Crooked Floors" and "Pull Back The Reins"  follow closely, without this meaning the rest are lacking quality.

\r\n They’ve managed to release songs in the true essense of the word. They can grab you with ease and not let you go for a long time while you will maintain your interest til the very end of the last track. Tempo is usually fast, almost thrashy but vary in total to keep the balance. Another thing I loved is that you’re not always waiting for a catchy chorus to make the final judgement like most "listeners" do today. Every second counts here, from the very first minute to the last one resulting in some of the most efficient songwriting modes I listened to lately. The feeling is uplifiting and groovy making this music ideal for a live show. The fantastic production can only be a bonus, being ideal even for today’s standards. Heavy, with reigning clarity and powerful to even make the speakers horny!
\r\n
\r\n An interesting release even for those ’hardcore’ narrow minded fans of the extreme. Not as much for its extremity but because we tend to forget what a song actually is. Without beatdowns and such tricks Comeback Kid bring songwriting back to the map.
