DISCORDIA - Flashback

DISCORDIA - Flashback

\r\n    A breed of differentiating.  Formed during 2005, the Italian act Discordia, released no full – length album until 2009. Under the –quite melancholic- title of Flashback, these Italians offer a …weird, rather idiosyncratic debut.
\r\n    Discordia is neither  a rock band, nor a metal one, not even a progressive outfit; their musical recipe hovers, in a way, above all necessary classifications. Actually, they could be called “progressive”, a term, however, harbouring innate dangers, as it would very well bring to one’s mind the over – burdened Dream Theater-esque compositions. What Discordia features though, is a disarming simplicity. On a practical level, their music is a peculiar mix: numerous are the tunes featuring an unexpected completion, and an even more unexpected evolution ( the “funny” melody at Tentazione ‘s 1:30, as well as the construction/ exploitation following is hell of an example). Quite like the natural aftermath of the genre they represent, penetrate both the jazzy influences (e.g. L’ultimo Respiro, 3:30 onwards), and the psychedelic rock (although rare) ones (e.g. ll Peso del Tempo ‘s intro, a purely prog composition). Essentially, what occurs in Flashback is a taboo contempt, a musical liberation; Dscordia sounds like a freed band indeed, regarding the songwriting process.
\r\n    Technically, this debut album is not too thick/ dense; on the other hand, it is not an album naked of technicalities either. Concerning the guitars (Cristiano Poli, Alessandro Vannini), the adequacy is prominent: quite the smooth guitar sound, guitar leads, much of soloing ( although tiring at times; it is melodic, nevertheless – the performance is emotional). On the drums, Francesco Micieli ’s ideas/ performance are impressive/ intelligent, the least, something confirmed in tracks as Il Peso del Tempo. The bass lines (Marco Capecchi) are rather the most indifferent compared to the rest of the instruments, without this implying that the very bass lines have been out of hastiness. Regarding the vocals, these are the most idiosyncratic possible. Truth be told, they are weird, unconventional enough though, engulfing a width from hard rock to power metal fields. It certainly ain’t an easily – digestible voice, and this is reinforced by the fact that the singing is in the Italian language. In any case, the band’s alternative personality comes refreshed.
\r\n    To make a long story short, Flashback is an i d i o s y n c r a t i c, artistic album, an impressive debut, in which one cannot doubt the inspiration, although it can get quite tiring in the end. This is music intelligently orchestrated, memorable – with infrequent mainstream sperms popping up (e.g. Nubi di Passagio), originally composed, alternatively performed, and quite promising.\r\n
