James Labrie - Static Impulse

James Labrie - Static Impulse

\r\nWell, it seems that good things come when you don’t really expect it. “Static Impulse” is the brand new album of Dream Theater’s frontman, James Labrie. The line up of his band consists of really GREAT musicians, not only performing wise, but, mostly, because the songs are really inspired: Matt Guillory, on the keyboards and responsible for most of the songwriting,  Peter Wildoer (Darkane), drums and screams, Marco Sfogli, guitar, and Ray Riendeau, bass.
\r\n“Static Impulse” is a mixture of progressive metal, coming from the era before minimalism was born and melodic death/modern metal, which is probably influenced by the US Metal scene nowadays. So, this is a different music side of James, who lately appeals a lot to extreme vocals. In this case, Peter Wildoer is on (most of) the extreme vocals.
\r\nThe songs are “normal” time wise and that makes the album pretty easy-listening; the beautiful melodic and catchy choruses, combined with the great work on the guitars and the production (Jens Borgen, Opeth, Katatonia) are enough to attract someone, even if he is not a fan of Prog metal. Generally, the melodies really stand out, having an exceptional rhythm section as a backbone.
\r\nJust in case someone is wondering if “Static Impulse” sounds like Dream Theater, the answer is yes, yet, in my opinion, it’s much better, powerful and much m ore inspired than their last albums. \r\n
