Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows

Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows

\r\nΙ’m sure there quite a few that remember the days when every band coming from Sweden or not wanted to play the "swedish way". Back then, the so called melodic death metal was at its peak and bands of this sound were popping out from everywhere in Europe like weed. Even bands like Septic Flesh had their moments when they recorded Revolution DNA at Fredman Studios. Not a bad album at all but they ultimetly followed a different path. Omnium Gatherum, although the genre has lost its initial glory, remain romantic enough to offer melodic death metal of that day and age.

\r\n Without being naive, but clearly essential, they compose without having the clock in mind but with an eye staring at the soul. Setting off with the 9 minute Everfields they round up the journey with the 9 and a half Deep Cold. In the 52 minutes inbetween you can find quality, trippy metal that finds its roots and influences in Insomnium, old Amorphis but also some "post" soundscapes. The songs strech out and touch their limits. Simple and ripe melodies swing and dig in followed by beautiful acoustic passages with an air of folk, thus keeping a high level of interest throughout the album.

\r\n Do not expect any high speed massacre though, the death metal parts are here but are mostly mid tempo paced. Some clean vocals help the listener take a breath from Jukka Pelkonen’s brutal screams and the variety completes its circle. I think the listener with patience and an open mind will find new treasures here and a good means to escape reality for some hours. My trip is something I will surely repeat soon enough, so those of you who dig this come forth and do yourselves a favour!\r\n
