TARJA - What Lies Beneath

\r\nWhile listening to Tarja Turunen’s new album I had the strange feeling that I was actually watching a movie, something that has to do not so much with music itself, that in most of the parts sounds like a movie soundtrack, but with the variety of the whole album.
\r\n“What Lies Beneath”, second release for the x-Nightwish singer, sounds heavier than its predecessor reminding me of Nightwish in some parts, which is fine by me. What really grabbed my attention and made me listen to it over and over again was the variety of the compositions and the way they are put in this album, they sound so different and so connected at the same time. As I said before, is like watching a movie with its plot reaching highs and lows, keeping your interest undiminished.
\r\nIn “What Lies Beneath” Tarja works with a variety of musicians like the German a cappella metallers Van Canto and the famous shredder Joe Satriani among others something that makes the album even more diverse since Tarja lets each artist put his personal touch giving each song a unique character.
\r\nHer voice sounds beautiful as always while especially impressive is her ability to adjust to the atmosphere and style of each song.
\r\nThe songs that really stand out are “Until My Last Breath”, “Dark Star” (featuring Phil Labonte of All That Remains),”Little Lies” and “Falling Away”(featuring Joe Satriani) while the choice of Whitesnake’s “Still Of The Night” proved to be disastrous since I don’t think that songs like this can be sang by just anyone and most important, is not her style.
\r\nExperimental mood, well structured songs and a voice that leaves no room for criticism is what makes “What Lies Beneath” a very decent Symphonic Power Metal release.
