UNSUN -Maurycy “Mauser” Stefanowicz and Aya

\r\nUNSUN, the Polish band led by ex-Vader guitarist Maurycy “Mauser” Stefanowicz have just released their second album “Clinic for dolls”. Metalzone conducted an interview with Mauser and their singer, Aya, just a few days before their tour with Tristania.

\r\nMetalzone: Hello guys and welcome to Metalzone. Would you like to introduce Unsun to our readers?
\r\nAya: Hey everybody. Firstable UnSun is alternative gothic metal band with heavy metal, rock and pop elements. Our band belongs to the new generation of gothic metal music. I have to say it because everybody call it gothic metal and we not feel good with this, in our music there are a lot of elements from varieties genres and we cant call that because of frontwoman and heavy sound of our music. Now I can tell something about the rest of things. We are a quartet, me as a singer, Mauser as a guitarist and the new members are Woytek Blaszkowski as a drummer and Patrick Malinowski as a bassplayer. Unsun was formed in 2006 and we ’ve record our first album in 2008.That was album entitled The End Of Life .Now we are a full band ,this is not only a side project of Mauser (i know some of you know this guy very well from past years of Vader).We play regular shows, we wanna record next albums and this is our main band, for all of us. \r\nMetalzone: Your second album, “Clinic for dolls”, has just been released. Tell us a few things about it.
\r\nAya: Yes, our second album is available from about one month. We have been recorded it in February this year in Studio X and Studio Hertz. The album has over 40 minutes of music. There is 11 songs with heavy, powerful sound with beautiful lyrics and very natural girly vocals of me. We have 2000 % satisfaction of our work on this album. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: How about the title of the album, is there any special meaning behind it?
\r\nAya: The sense of the title include the all story behind the lyrics’ content of the album. So that’s why we’ve choose “Clinic for dolls” for the title of the album.
\r\nClinic for dolls this is a place for sick people without a soul and empty hearts, this is some kind of hell .There is no entry from this place. Also this is a story about a little, sensitive girl who was hurt by the creatures without a soul, by the bad people. The all album is like a story about this girl. I think every of us could be on the same place of the girl cause every of us have got a disappointment from other people. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: If you had to put a label to your music rather than describe it, what would that label be?
\r\nAya: It’s hard to tell about only one genre. Especially for the artist when they must tell about their own art. We are not music critics but simple artist and this is not our work to label anything.
\r\nFirst of all, what is the most important for me, our music is writing with our all hearts and this is really true, In our songs are our all feelings. This is the most important, not labeling it. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: Aya, you have a magnificent voice. Your singing style doesn’t follow the “rules” of most female fronted bands, as you avoid doing operatic vocals. Is there any chance to hear you trying a different style in the future?
\r\nAya: Thank you. I dont know. Now I’m focus on UnSun only and we all in the band agree that in UnSun can’t be an operatic vocals. I have my own style of singing ,as you said, and I wanna develop this style in the upcoming years yet. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: We already know that the band is led by Vader’s ex guitarist, Mauser. How about the rest of the members, were they involved in other bands previously?
\r\nMauser: Yes of course.Aya was a solo singer ,she has been played before the lyrical,she played on the guitar too.She was like some polish kind of Jewel.But less popularOur new drummer Woytek Blaszkowski played in “Non Opus Dei” and finnaly our basplayer has his own metal project.
\r\nBut now all of us are involved in our band ,UnSun.And this is our main goal. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: Mauser, most people are already familiar with your music past and, actually, I have to admit that listening to a different style from you was a pleasant surprise. How about the other members, what is each one’s musical background and influences?
\r\nMauser: As I said before each of us played in other bands and each has own musical background and influences. It’s hard to tell about guys from my band but I know they listen to metal music for sure but they are also very open to another kind of music. So, that’s why they play in UnSun. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: I just watched the video for the song “Home” and I got to say, you guys have done a great work! Tell us a few things about the concept and how it is combined with the lyrics.
\r\nAya: Yes,we realesed it about month ago. That was incredible experience. We set it in 3 towns in many of places and sets with a lot of really creative and talented people. We were in Wolsztyn (in Railway Museum), Terespol when we set in the old train Orient Express and the last day was set in Łódź ,Films Academy.
\r\nI didn’t realized that we have in Poland so beautiful places and things. I mean now the old Orient Express from 19 century. This train was magical inside, these all old things were really impressed.
\r\nA productions like this are really expensive, but we wanna do something special in all fields of our work, the all parts like music, photos, videos, shows etc should be doing with 100% of professionalism and fans should get something special. This is very important for us. We don’t have to earn a lot but everything must be doing better than good, So, this is it for what we spend our money and we are always poor...But we have 100% of satisfaction.
\r\nThe lyrics fit to the story very good. I sing ”alone I look for the way” and that’s why I’m going on the train. Then is a turn for a chorus and there are following words “among the stars, there is a place, to where my heart, always returns ”this is about home, about missing to place where is my home,to where my heart belongs.And about it this is the story of the video. We would like to do it with a little dramatic and we did it,The story is about woman coming back to her home, to her husband who is a constuctor of the bridges...and now I cant tell anything more... \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: Do the lyrics play an important role in your songs or do you pay more attention to the music?
\r\nMauser:I think that both of these things are important.I think that lyrics have to be with a deep sense and should have a special message for people.This is important thing of our songs.The lyrics should have a special rhythm and melody.Each of the lyrics has its own mood,tell some story and the same is with music,music tell story too,but in our band the music itself cant be sterling..Both couldn’t  be exist singly.Music and lyrics in our songs complement each other. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: Who writes most of the lyrics and the music? What comes first, do you write the melodies and then you incorporate the lyrics or the opposite?
\r\nAya: I’m responsible for the lyrics and the music is writening by Mauser.But two songs from the first cd like Memories and Face the truth are my composition .
\r\nUsually first come music and then lyrics and vocals. \r\n

\r\nMetalzone: There’s an upcoming tour with Tristania which is going to begin in a few days. Apart from that, what are the next steps for Unsun?
\r\nAya: We have a lot of plans about touring for the next year. Now we wanna focus on the tour and getting experience on the stage. Besides I know that this is the most important now for our band. We have a new line -up and we proved already ourselves on the tour that we are a really good team. \r\n
