Royal Hunt @ Gagarin 205

I arrived at GAGARIN where the gig would take place, a little bit late and when I saw that the venue was almost empty, I was hoping that the initial schedule had changed and that the show would start later. That the band that was on stage already wasn’t GODIVA but some other support group which was probably added in the billing the last minute and we just weren’t informed about it, therefore, there weren’t many fans there. However, this was the picture that lasted all night long. Wherever I was looking at, there were fans here and there, as if we had incidentally come in the venue just to check in if there ‘s an event or something.

\r\nGODIVA, which was the support band of the show, didn’t really excite the audience, as those who were attending were a bit cold, plus they seemed to be bored. To be honest, I don’t think that GODIVA was that bad. Their performance wasn’t a “turn off” neither, in fact they were trying as much as they could on stage, given the conditions. Maybe it wasn’t the best choice for opening act, as their musical style is too “straight” to manage to fit in the whole feeling that would derive from the coming up show, and I mean ROYAL HUNT of course.
\r\n
\r\nAnd I’m saying that, merely cause, even though the fans weren’t too many, this band managed to create atmosphere, a word with more than one interpretations actually, depending on how each one perceives it, yet in this case hardly could anyone doubt it. It was a big surprise for me when the band announced that MARK BOALS would join the line-up, and I have to admit that it was a very essential reason to not miss this show for anything in the world!
\r\n
\r\nI don’t think that I would exaggerate if I said that his performance was majestical, as his voice was literally “exploding”. Within a very few minutes, they managed to “wake us up” while being bored to death due to the unreasonable delay before they got on stage and of course the impressive absence of the crowd. For that they deserve a big “congrats”, and honestly many times I was wondering how these people must feel while having to deal with such situations, i.e. performing in front of an empty club.
\r\n
\r\nAs it was expected, a big part of the set list was based on the 2 Paradox albums, while the rest of it included material that would easily satisfy each one’s “hunger” to watch this band live. I use this term, as I think that apart from the very good albums, this band in consisted of exceptional musicians as well. ROYAL HUNT gave a great show, their performance was fascinating, and left us with the hope that we will soon see them again in our country.
