Dantalion - Call of the broken souls

Dantalion - Call of the broken souls

When I first saw the front cover, I knew pretty much what I was about to hear.. Even if we were in the middle of a hot summer, I didn’t care, I liked the idea of going back to my roots.. For some reason, I wanted it to be dark, slow and having things to say.. Except the slow part, I was close enough! Dantalion come from Germany and “Call of the broken souls” is what they would like to add in our days’ black metal scene.. Honestly, it was of thought the number of the mistakes, mainly at the drums parts..  Well, they were not exactly mistakes, I would say that there were the standard and defined lines that should be followed, but, let’s say the second verse was played slightly differently than the first one, adding a live feeling by that.. Drummer seems quite capable of playing difficult stuff, I don’t know why they chose to do that..  Even weirder though is the fact that the whole result sounds pretty well, I cannot explain how this is achieved! 8 songs, or maybe 6, as the first and the last do their work as an intro and outro, without meaning that they sound less inspired.. I really liked the clean parts, guitars at these points sound well treated, but as a unity too, sonically they have come to a good result! As I mentioned before, my predictions came untrue only as regards to the tempo of the songs.. Dark? It is, in a lyrically level as also as and in melody-writing too, it’s just that there are far more blast points than slower ones.. Does it have something to offer? Writing great black metal songs is much tougher than many people think.. It’s not only some blasts and screams what you need to stand out! Luckily, Dantalion have more than these.. I don’t really think that “Call of the broken souls” will be ever mentioned as a masterpiece, a well-executed production and some inspired ideas though make this release worth taking its place in the playlists of those who didn’t stop looking for new and talented bands of the genre since we entered the 00’s…
