East of Lyra: Kαλή Προσπάθεια Για Σύγχρονο Eπικό Progressive Rock

Cloven Hoof's, Lee Payne, is considered by many traditional heavy metal fans to be equal to Steve Harris, in terms of imagination and creativity. In this new project, he decided to unwind his most progressive rock ideas and worries, similar perhaps to the early years of Cloven Hoof - remember the first few minutes, and the less heavy parts of "Starship Sentinel", from the "Opening Ritual" EP.

The first album of East of Lyra is quite interesting. The songs give off a very nice freshness, optimism and refreshing note, achieved mainly through the uplifting, delightful up-tempo melodies and choruses, as well as Chris Dando's impressive vocals. The music could be described as a mix of Rush and Yes, but in a more epic direction - at least in some tracks. It certainly has a more modern and richer sound, so it doesn't sound like a 70's or 80's recently discovered disc, but it looks like an attempt to revive that sound and redefine it in today's terms.

This release has something magical. While you feel that you hear something clearly referring to Rush and Yes, however, the epic development of most tracks and the modern sound, give a distinctive color, so the album exudes a feeling that the listener feels he has never encountered before. Perhaps those who find the old progressive rock bands tiresome and anachronistic, will change their opinion with East of Lyra, and gain another insight into this genre.

The album's highlights are probably its most epic moments, such as "Siren Song", an amazing track with beautiful tunes, changes and feeling. "Shadowlands", is also great, with an amazing chorus, but generally all songs are good. Some songs may start out in a less impressive way, or resemble the bands mentioned above, but most of them evolve into small, pompous hymns with striking melodies and choruses.

The album is not heavy metal, it is not reminiscent of Cloven Hoof, but at times it brings out the same fairy-tale air and sound that the old Cloven Hoof had. It is a progressive rock album but not technical, complicated or tedious – it is very melodic and is recommended for those who have a blind trust in Lee Payne, as long as they like some progressive rock songs at least. The standard fans of Rush, Yes, pomp rock, Dream Theater's "Images and Words", and newer progressive bands with an epic past such as Caravaggio, Vittorio Ballerio’s and Fabio Troiani's new effort from Adramelch, will find a release with very good elements, not exhausted in a few or superficial hearings.
