\r\nThis is the second offering by Norwegian outfit Evig Natt, who, with “Darkland” introduce us a really good work of atmospheric/gothic/death/black(ugh…let me catch my breath..) metal. Even though they don’t sound exactly original, they manage to keep the listener’s attention alive since this album is full of good ideas than are capable of filling in for songs of 8 or 9 minutes. As Evig Natt’s main influences we could “blame” Anathema (mainly their older stuff), My Dying Bride, even Moonspell, while the gothic elements can be heard here and there throughout the whole album. Most of the songs are dominated by a constant change of tempo and mood, either that is black metal riffing or clever melodies, which tend to remind many things and nothing at the same time, showing how good have Evig Natt incorporated their influences. As someone would imagine the vocals on this album follow the same old male brutal/female melodic vocals bipolar, with the latter being good as expected (I really wonder, are there any atmospheric metal bands with really “bad” female vocals?) but with the first sounding everything but indifferent or typical, unlike many of similar cases. In addition, the really good production gives a bonus to the final result, leading me to conclude that “Darkland” can be suggested unreservedly to friends of the atmospheric death scene in general, as it is equipped with all those ingredients of a good album for this certain genre and may be proven a pleasant discovery for some.
