Dead Emotions - Pathways to Catharsis

\r\n"Pathways to Catharsis" is the third full length album from the Germans Dead Emotions which also features a new singer in the lineup. At first judging by the name I thought I had to deal with a gothic metal band here and even the bizarre intro of the album can really mislead someone about the musical direction of this album. Yet the truth is a completely different matter. \r\n

\r\n"Pathway to Catharsis" is rather a straight-forward death metal album with even some perceptible black metal formulation and also quite a few thrash-based groovy elements. Of course the basic atmosphere of the album is clearly based on the melody built up by the emotional driven guitar lines but the overall feeling is brutal and with a death metallic purity. The vocals are mostly deep growls but there are some black metal shrieks as well but in my opinion the shrieking is far more better than the death metal growling stuff which really needs to be worked a great deal more in order to achieve a more improved and highly skilled desirable result. From the other hand the band should also put an extra exercise on their instruments and the ideas set down on them cause this effort really lack the appropriate organic coherence and the slight variation that would make the songs more absorbing and less monotonous. Ending this review I should also mention that with the official album release there are included also two videos bonus: "There Is No Dawn" (video clip) and "Disdained" (live at Lindenkeller Freising).\r\n
