Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

\r\nMr. Wilson, the multi-talented guy, is back again! Not that he ever stopped being for the matter of fact! Countless projects, in parallel with Porcupine Tree’s works, make him as one of the most creative and productive artists of an expanded genre that, even if it has its base in metal, it is not afraid to experiment in disparate styles, starting from modern jazz and end to ambient, even electronica..  In his official debut album, even if there are some more under his name (try to find them, especially in vinyl editions), Steven sounds like a mix of Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Blackfield, no matter how strange this may seems at first..  Sound is leaning towards PT, that’s for sure, anyone could easily say that “Insurgentes” is a PT album, even if it had to be considered as an extremely experimental one..\r\n

\r\nRecognizable voice, predictive –seen by the unpredicted point of view- melodies, decent – the way it should be, as always- production, mainstream marketing approach, everything is there to create an image, an idea of an album that could have never been released by someone that makes their first steps in discography.. So many the tracks I think I‘ve listened to long ago, yet they sound so new..  The progressive moments, the melodic ones, everything is in its place, as everyone would expect..  Or shouldn’t they in such a work from this guy, when he decides to make his solo project? Is it because we were expecting something extremely extraordinary, maybe a little bit more electro, even just more paranoid, why not? Paranoid, ah? Well, maybe this is.. Even if not in an obvious way, still there are songs though, songs like “Get all you deserve” that have an unconventional way of composing lying underneath, for sure..\r\n

\r\nMy opinion is that for artists like Steven Wilson you wouldn’t need just another review in order to convince you whether you are gonna buy this CD or not! Only thing I can say is that this is a work worth respect and that –if you are of those collector ones- the preorder for the 7” inch vinyl just ended, the red is already out of stock, you should hurry in order to get your copy, either in black or white vinyl..  Don’t even let me get started about that great 4-LP version of the album that went collectible before it even appeared! That’s all for those interested, at the end it’s music what it has to be interesting and “insurgentes” won’t really let you down.. Spend some time on it, try to understand.. Happy listenings..\r\n
